'True Detective' season 3 rumors: Matthew McConaughey willing to return as Rust Cohle
Matthew McConaughey is still interested to reprise his role as criminal investigator Rustin "Rust" Cohle in another season of "True Detective" in HBO.
In an interview with The Rich Eisen Show, the Academy Award-winning actor was reminded by the host about how he fell in love at first sight with the role. "You were originally going to go for the part of Marty (Woody Harrelson's character) and then you were like, 'This guy Rustin Cohle really speaks to me,'" the host stated.
But when asked if he would still like to reprise his role for the second time, McConaughey claimed that he would love to if given the chance. "If that thing was written well and it came up again, I wouldn't hesitate for a second," the actor stated in the interview as reported by Entertainment Weekly. "Oh, I'm open to it for sure," he added.
McConaughey earned rave reviews for portraying the role of the deeply troubled homicide detective from Texas who was assigned to work on a state police department in Louisiana in 1995. He worked alongside Martin "Marty" Hart (Woody Harrelson).
Talks about the development of "True Detective" season 3 became dim after the second season of the American crime drama anthology earned negative reviews from critics. The second season starred Colin Farrell as Detective Ray Velcoro, Rachel McAdams as Detective Ani Bezzerides, Taylor Kitsch as California Highway Patrol Officer Paul Woodrugh, and Vince Vaughn as professional criminal Frank Semyon.
Despite the low ratings and negative critical review, former HBO boss Michael Lombardo previously told the press during the Television Critics Association press tour that the network is still open to working on another season of "True Detective."
"I'd love to do another season," Lombardo stated as reported by Den of Geek. "I haven't asked every one of the 12 million viewers who is watching, but I think what he's doing is so much bolder, braver and satisfying that what I'm seeing in film. I'd happily be in business with him for a long time."
New details of "True Detective" season 3 is expected to be announced in the coming days.
