'Uncharted' movie release date and news: 'Stranger Things' director Shawn Levy attached to the project

Naughty Dog just recently launched the last game in the "Uncharted" franchise with "Uncharted 4: A Thief's End." News has come out that Sony Pictures is working on a movie based on the action adventure franchise, and "Stranger Things" producer/director Shawn Levy has been attached to direct the project.

The news comes from Deadline, and they say that "A-Team" director Joe Carnahan was originally the first choice to direct the movie, but he has since then moved on to work on Sony's "Bad Boys" sequel, "Bad Boys for Life;" most of the recent script is still Carnahan's work, however.

Levi has previously worked on movies like "Real Steel" and the "Night at the Museum" franchise, so "Uncharted" fans can be assured that he has the directing chops to handle action and adventure. Levi has also recently produced the upcoming alien movie "Arrival," starring Amy Adams and Jeremy Renner.

As for his work on "Stranger Things," reports say that Levy is set to produce and direct some episodes for the upcoming second season. He is also said to be directing a remake of the movie "Starman," so fans can expect that the "Uncharted" movie may have a long wait ahead of it before it hits theaters.

The first "Uncharted" game follows the story of Nathan Drake, the descendant of explorer Francis Drake. He's in search of the lost city of El Dorado, but rival treasure hunters are set to get to the treasure before he does. Along the way he runs into poachers, Nazis and mutated Spaniards.

The "Uncharted" franchise has always been highly regarded by gamers and the second and third entries in the game have received multiple "Game of the Year" awards. The fourth and final one was also well received by many critics and it holds a score of 10/10 on Gamespot.

No official release date has been announced for the "Uncharted" movie.
