'Veep' season 6 spoilers, updates: Showrunner hints at what's in store for Selina; Trump-like character in series?
Not much is known about the upcoming season of HBO's "Veep," except that when it returns, Selina Meyer would be out of the White House. Now, showrunner David Mandel dishes on what's in store for the character and what fans can expect when the series premieres sometime in 2017.
Mandel stepped in for former showrunner Armando Iannucci as the series was transitioning from season 4 to season 5. The cliffhanger season 4 finale saw Selina (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) figuring in an Electoral College tie in the general election that could have her running mate Tom James (Hugh Laurie) eventually become president.
In season 5, Mandel worked with the writers so that the plot had Selina acquiescing to Tom's suggestion that she become his vice president, should he win. However, as the season 5 finale revealed, Senator Laura Montez (Andrea Savage) was elected president.
Speaking to Bustle, Mandel said, "Since that's [the presidency] what she [Selina] needs, it's my job not to give it to her."
Mandel likewise said that the transition from being a woman of power to an ordinary civilian is something Selina will find hard to chew. The same would have a domino effect on people working for her, especially for Gary (Tony Hale).
"One thing I can tell you is that Gary will be by her side – and I would not want to be in his shoes," the showrunner said. "We've seen that she doesn't deal well with defeat and I think she's going to lose her quest for relevancy."
In a separate interview with Forbes' Simon Thompson, the showrunner confirmed that writing for "Veep" season 6's story has commenced and rehearsals will start late September or early October. Apparently, the writers are working on their story with the intent of integrating the election of a [real] new president into the show.
That said, some were left wondering if there will be a character in the upcoming season who will resemble Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump. To this, Mandel told Decider that they already have one on the show, referring to Jonah Ryan (Timothy Simons), White House Liaison to the Vice President.
"Basically he is a – not a millionaire, although I guess neither is Trump – but Jonah is a thin-skinned know-nothing who is temperamental and has horrific outbursts and yet oddly, somehow, he struck a chord with the voters," Mandel said, describing Jonah's similarities to Trump.
