Episode 5 titled "The Usurper" began with Ragnar and his men returning to Kattegat. He asked Athelstan (George Blagden) for information about Paris and was pleased to hear that it was a great city with huge walls and beautiful women.

When Ragnar and his men arrived, the villagers rushed to the beach to great them. Lagertha (Katheryn Winnick) told both the pregnant wives of Tolstons that he was killed on the battlefield.

Rollo (Clive Standen) searched the beach for Siggy (Jessalyn Gilsig). Aslaug (Alyssa Sutherland) broke the news to him that Siggy drowned and died when she was saving Ragnar's sons from the lake. Rollo freaked out and stormed off. Ragnar demanded to know from Aslaug why Siggy was the one watching their kids and not her. Helga (Maude Hirst) jumped to Aslaug's defense, saying that all three of them were taking turns watching the kids. But Ragnar won't believe her.

A grieving and drunk Rollo then started fighting with the men in the village and even took on Bjorn (Alexander Ludwi).

Upon being told of what happened, Ecbert at first pretended to be angry but admitted later that it was his plan all along in his bid to control Mercia.

Back in Kattegat, Ragnar announced his plan to attack Paris and it was met with much enthusiasm by his men. Rollo visited the seer who informed him that the gods had a lot of good in store for him.

Floki (Gustaf Skarsgård) arrived to inform Ragnar that Odin had come to the village as the Wanderer and had slept with Aslaug.
