'Vikings' season 5 cast news, spoilers update: 'WWE' Hall of Famer Edge joins cast
Former WWE superstar Adam "Edge" Copeland is boarding History's "Vikings" in a recurring role.
According to Deadline, the retired professional wrestler is joining "Vikings" season 5 in the role of Ketill Flatnose. The character is described as a "fierce and brave warrior" who is selected by Floki (Gustaf Skarsgård) to be one of the leaders of a Viking party traveling to Iceland to build a community there.
Prior to his casting in the historical drama, Copeland was in Syfy's "Haven" and in The CW's "The Flash," where he played the role of Al Rothstein/Atom-Smasher.
Since retiring from professional wrestling five years ago, Copeland has appeared in a variety of independent movie roles and has played himself in several "WWE" productions.
He joins fellow season 5 newbie Jonathan Rhys Meyers, who is set to appear in "Vikings" in an undisclosed role. Meyers' "Vikings" casting marks a reunion between "The Tudors" alum and "Vikings" creator Michael Hirst, who also created "The Tudors."
Meyers' casting announcement back in March coincided with the show's season 5 renewal.
"The brilliant writing and depth of historical research and authenticity brought to the screen by Michael Hirst paired with our talented cast and crew, has made this series one of the most compelling, visually stunning historical dramas on television," History president and general manager Jana Bennett said in a statement at the time. "'Vikings' has raided the hearts of audiences and we are thrilled that Jonathan Rhys Meyers will become a bigger part of the History family after his incredible performance in our upcoming production of 'Roots.'"
"Vikings" is currently in the middle of production for the back half of its fourth season, which will debut in the fall.
While "Vikings" season 5 is currently without an official release date, PopSugar suggests that the new season will debut in 2017, possibly in mid-February.
