'Westworld' news: showrunners address going up against HBO sibling 'GoT' in the Golden Globe Best Drama category

It is the year for freshmen series with a lot of great shows debuting this season with so much potential moving forward. The only difference, however, is that HBO is no stranger to putting out original content gobbled by fans —  whether it is the first season of "True Detective" or "The Wire." However, the cable network is facing a pretty tough dilemma this awards season with its new cult hit "Westworld" going toe to toe with its seasoned favorite, "Game of Thrones" ("GoT").

The science fiction show is going up against the crew from Westeros as well as the group from the 80s in "Stranger Things" for the Best Drama Series accolade for the upcoming Golden Globe ceremony. And while at this point, "Game of Thrones" appears to be holding the higher ground against the two debut shows, "Westworld" has put out a great debut iteration enough to launch new fan communities and Reddit forums discussing narrative theories.

Obviously, everybody's goal is to win the hardware, but showrunners Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy are playing the less competitive route saying that they are just thrilled to be in the same category as "Game of Thrones."

"You don't 'compete' against Game of Thrones so much as be happy you're in the same conversation," Nolan told Entertainment Weekly when asked about going up against a show that has arguably influenced their own. "That's a magnificent show and we're thrilled and flattered to be in the same conversation."

Joy chimed in the conversation revealing that while it would be great for HBO to take the Best Drama nod, she personally is also a fan of Netflix's breakout series of the year.

"That's the thing about this year, I'm a fangirl of all the nominees. I'm friends with a lot of people on these shows and it's just thrilling to see so much great content out there. As a TV watcher, what more could I possibly want," she said.

"Westworld" is also nominated in the singles category with Evan Rachel Wood getting a nod for Best Actress for her role as Dolores. Thandie Newton meanwhile gets the Best Supporting Actress nom for her role as Maeve.
