'Westworld' season 1 episode 2 spoilers: Dolores keeps remembering as two Newcomers arrive with hidden agendas
"Westworld" may have initially looked like the typical western drama series infused with predictable lawless violence and impassioned romance except that HBO's new big-budget series is really more than just that.
Borne out of the combined creative forces of husband and wife Jonathan and Lisa Joy Nolan, and loosely based on the 1973 movie by Michael Crichton, the series billed as a sci-fi thriller splits its narrative into two core settings: Westworld, the futuristic Western-themed amusement park populated by androids, and the highly advanced technological facility that runs the park's entire operations.
The first episode showed the park going haywire with faulty androids, known as Hosts, acting out unscripted events, with one of them ultimately going on a killing spree that wasn't at all part of the park's plans.
When the episode ended and all the buggy androids were herded into a storage area, viewers were left with a cliffhanger. The optimistic android, Dolores Abernathy (Evan Rachel Wood), who had previously sworn to Westworld's head of security, Ashley Stubbs (Luke Hemsworth), that she could not possibly hurt a living thing, suddenly slapped a fly dead on her neck.
In the next episode of "Westworld" titled "Chestnut," Dolores continues to question the reality of her world, while two human guests, known as Newcomers, come to experience Westworld with agendas of their own. It may show how exactly the Newcomers enter the simulated Western world and for how long they can stay there for the hefty price they pay. It also promised to provide a deeper view of Westworld from a Newcomer's point of view.
The Man in Black (Ed Harris), who seems hell-bent on uncovering the truth behind Westworld, may find some progress in his quest with the help of a condemned man known only as Lawrence (Clifton Collins Jr.).
Meanwhile, the amusement park's creative director, Dr. Robert Ford (Anthony Hopkins) refuses a plot idea presented by narrative director Lee Sizemore in favor of his own ideas that may benefit the Hosts, which he had created, instead of the paying Newcomers.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, showrunner Jonathan hinted at the possibility of the show possibly featuring the two other theme-park attractions presented in the source film: the Roman World and the Medieval World.
"We've got an awful lot of material to cover just with Westworld, but you want to stay tuned," Jonathan said. He also mentioned that the androids maintained their supposedly nonexistent memories and just how far these memories can pose an important question that will resonate throughout the entire first season.
"Westworld" episode 2 airs on Sunday, Oct. 9 at 9 p.m. EDT on HBO.
