'Wonder Woman' release date latest news: Patty Jenkins talked about 'Wonder Woman' film with Warner Bros. more than a decade ago
DC Extended Universe (DCEU) fans and moviegoers in general still have to wait for a few more months before they can see Gal Gadot star as Wonder Woman in the character's first standalone movie. And while the wait may seem agonizing for some people, it pales in comparison to the wait director Patty Jenkins had to endure so she can get her chance to direct the film.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Jenkins admitted that she had talked to Warner Bros. about "Wonder Woman" more than 10 years ago because she has "always been moved by the idea of movies that are personal but still have a huge reach."
Jenkins knew that she carries a tremendous amount of responsibility on her shoulders as she directs the character's first solo movie, but she has always loved the character and the genre, so she felt that she had to take this project despite the pressure associated with it.
Jenkins also revealed that the film would be based on William Moulton Marston's original "Wonder Woman" comic books in the '40s, and her aim was "to honor who she was, her legacy, and to make her as universal as she was to all of us little girls who ran around pretending to be Lynda Carter when we were kids." Wonder Woman is one of the few female superheroes who aren't simply a side character, and a lot of kids do look up to her.
During the interview, Jenkins also talked about how it was important for Wonder Woman to be as multidimensional as possible. So, even though she is one of the strongest characters in the DCEU, she will still come across "as vulnerable, loving and warm."
"It's been incredible to make something about a superhero that stands for a message of fighting for a loving, thoughtful government, especially in this current climate," she added.
"Wonder Woman" is scheduled to premiere on June 2, 2017.
