WWE news: SummerSlam results and reaction from critics
Normally known as the second biggest pay-per-view event in the World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), WWE SummerSlam 2016 certainly did things in a big way.
Held at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, fans flocked the arena to try and get a glimpse of the superstars in action.
It certainly was a lot of action, and surprises were around as well as the night featured a few surprising results and questionable decisions.
One of those was in the WWE Women's Championship where Sasha Banks tried to defend her title against Charlotte.
Banks only recently beat Charlotte to win the title on Monday Night Raw, and with a huge backing, it was expected that Banks would be on a great run.
Unfortunately, she wasn't given that chance as Charlotte regained the title in a match that was impressive but was also scary at one point. Early in the match, Charlotte appeared to botch a move that could have seriously injured Banks in the turnbuckle.
Despite that, the match went on and Charlotte picked up the victory, and the only hope at the moment is that they could work out enough of a feud for a WrestleMania meeting.
On the other hand, the John Cena–AJ Styles battle was one of the big highlights of the night as the two gave excellent performances in front of their fans.
It was better for Styles as he beat Cena cleanly and now owns a 2-0 record over the biggest name in the industry today, which should work well as the company pushes for the former TNA star.
For the WWE World Championship match between Dean Ambrose and Dolph Ziggler, the battle ended with Ambrose retaining the title.
It was a see-saw matchup, but they are expected to have a long rivalry down the line, and this may be only the beginning of a great feud.
For the first-ever Universal Championship, many expected Seth Rollins to take the title as he is the bigger star between the two. However, in one of the bolder moves of the company during the event, it resulted in Balor being given the title, making him the first-ever champion of Raw's "New Era."
It was a great battle with both giving and taking as much damage to excite the fans. This should still be one great feud as Rollins will definitely try to get his hands on the title soon.
But with Balor getting the title, it shows just how much faith the company has placed on him; and based on this match-up, he is ready for the limelight.
A surprising result is the United States Championship match-up between Roman Reigns and Rusev.
The two tangled immediately as they saw each other, with Rusev attacking Reigns even before the bell rang but Reigns hit the other and injured Rusev until doctors deemed him unfit to continue.
It is known that the two have been feuding for a while, but many consider this move as a way to lengthen their rivalry until the next big event.
Finally, the much-awaited battle between legends Brock Lesnar and Randy Orton was not well-received after many believe it was hyped up too much to have that kind of result.
The match ended with Lesnar thoroughly beating up Orton. He would eventually bust Orton up with elbow strikes until it was decided that Orton could not continue.
It was expected that Lesnar would win the match-up, but it was considered a rip-off by some critics for it to end that way.
