Xiaomi Mi MIX release date, news, specs update: Xiaomi launches edge-to-edge 'concept phone;' US, worldwide release not yet expected
The recently concluded Xiaomi event this month unveiled the latest Xiaomi Mi Note 2 tablet. This device has been rumored to be released this year, and the company did not disappoint with the Mi Note 2's impressive specs. However, the participants of the event were surprised when Xiaomi presented its new powerful smartphone that they called the Xiaomi Mi MIX. Most tech enthusiasts might not have seen this coming this year, but the Mi MIX's highly innovative design makes it among today's must-have devices.
As reported by Engadget, the Xiaomi Mi MIX sports a 6.4-inch edge-to-edge LCD screen with up to 1080p resolution. The most noticeable part of the Mi MIX's outside appearance, however, is its glossy body made of full ceramic. There are buttons, but the earpiece jack and proximity sensor are not present, giving the smartphone a cleaner look when viewed on the Mi MIX's top edge.
The edge-to-edge screen display of the Xiaomi Mi MIX is so expansive that it actually takes up to 91.3 percent of the smartphone's available surface space. This is the reason why the earpiece and infrared proximity sensor are missing on this design. To make up for their absence, a cantilevered piezoelectric actuator behind the glass screen will function to produce audible sound for phone calls. As for the proximity sensor, the Mi MIX will introduce ultrasound for the first time as a replacement. This ultrasound feature is made possible by Elliptic Labs' "Inner Beauty" software solution.
So far, the Xiaomi Mi MIX looks like it is ready to conquer the world market with its powerful new design. However, Phone Arena reported that the mass production of the smartphone will be limited to only 10,000 units per month. Furthermore, IHS Markit China Director Kevin Wang stated that Xiaomi does not want to use the Mi MIX to engage in so-called "hunger marketing." The company branding the Mi MIX as a "concept phone" is already an indication that the smartphone is not intended for mass production that will cater to the markets worldwide, including the United States.
For now, that Xiaomi MIX is slated for release in China on November 4. As the smartphone is still a concept, it cannot be expected to be released elsewhere in the globe, although there is always a chance that the device will further be developed and be ready for export.
