'Shadowhunters' teaser, news, release date: Promo reveals tension between Clary and Alec

In the latest trailer for Freeform's TV adaptation of Cassandra Clare's "The Mortal Instruments" novels, Jace (Dominic Sherwood) was captured by season 1 antagonist Valentine (Alan van Sprang). This Shadowhunter's abduction has gotten the remaining members of the New York Institute on edge.

As revealed in the clip, season 2 of "Shadowhunters" will be about how Jace becomes Valentine's captive, what their relationship is like, and how the Shadowhunter community will prevent further disasters. Jace appeared to be pulled into the dark side by Valentine. He even takes away the life of someone Clary holds dear. In addition, in the teaser, Alec (Matthew Daddario) can be seen blaming Clary (Katherine McNamara) for Jace's current circumstance.

Aside from getting Jace on his side, Valentine will continue to recruit more troops to expand his army. As previously reported, Valentine has acquired the Mortal Cup, which is essential in his plot to grow his army and overthrow the Clave. With the impending threat, Clary and the rest of the younger Shadowhunters will start questioning the Clave and their plan to save Jace. To save the shadow world from Valentine's evil schemes, the Shadowhunters need to form alliances with the creatures they once called enemies.

The second season of "Shadowhutners" will open with an episode called "The Guilty Blood." New cast members will be introduced including Alisha Wainwright and Nick Sagar. Wainwright will portray the werewolf Maia. Meanwhile, Sagar will portray Victor Aldertree, the Clave representative who was sent to the New York Institution to take over the place after Jace departed with Valentine. He was tasked to head the search for the Jace; but he will place the Institute on lockdown, preventing the rest of the Shadowhunters from doing anything productive.

Viewers can catch the second season of "Shadowhunters" when it premieres on Freeform on Jan. 2, 8 p.m. EST.
